Abstract

The study aims to determine how severe environmental conditions influence demographic processes. The article reviews the size, age and gender composition, birth and death rates, rates of natural and migration increase of Norilsk’s population in the 1950-1960s. Scientific novelty of the study lies in the time series analysis covering the first decade of the city’s existence. As a result of the research, it has been determined that extreme birth and death rates characterise only the first stage of the city’s population formation. During the considered period, the main body of the residential population was formed, with its growth attributed to natural increase.
