Abstract

The paper aims to reveal specificity of the war theme realization in B. Shaw’s short plays (1915-1916) of the similar political problematic. The researcher analyses paradoxic situations and personages’ grotesquely inadequate behaviour creating the comic effect. The research objective involves identifying the means of the war theme artistic realization in B. Shaw’s dramaturgy. The study contributes to understanding the genre-forming features of B. Shaw’s extravaganzas, and therein lies its scientific originality. The conducted research allows concluding that B. Shaw’s three anti-war plays possess four features of the extravaganza genre and are pure extravaganzas. To achieve extravagance, the dramatist uses techniques of farce and grotesque.
