Abstract
In the early stage of elite education in Korea’s higher education, college students had a strong elite consciousness. He was conscious of realizing justice through criticism and participation in society and was full of confidence. However, behind the scenes lies the desire to increase economic status. With rapid industrialization since the mid-to-late 1970s, the demand for high-quality manpower with college degrees has increased, and the wage gap between educational backgrounds has widened. As a result, the value of a college degree has risen. Higher education began to enter the stage of popularization amid the spread of credentialism. In that sense, the higher education popularization was the result of inequality according to educational background. Since the 1980s when higher education was fully converted to the stage of popularization, the elite consciousness of college students has virtually disappeared and the wage gap has also narrowed. However, the value of educational background, that is, credentialism, remained strong and supported inequality.
