Abstract

The article analyses the peculiarities of interpreting penance theme in Saint Ignatius’s (Bryanchaninov) sermons. The originality of the study is conditioned by the aspiration to examine the realization of penance theme at different levels of Bryanchaninov’s artistic system: to reveal the semantic filling of this theme, to trace how its artistic interpretation fits with the Orthodox doctrine of salvation, how this theme is realized at the level of the imaginative system and in the sermon’s architectonics. Analysing the homilies included in the “Ascetic Sermon” collection the researcher concludes that penance, being the key moral and ethical notion, is a meaningful dominant of sermons, is personified in the images of biblical personages and performs the function of the compositional centre: developing this conception throughout the sermon, the author elevates it to the status of the semantic nucleus of the sermon’s spiritual theme.
