Abstract

The study describes the new youth reading practices in Russian society and analyzes the factors contributing to the change in the traditional model of reading behavior. The author considers a transforming structure of reading preferences, the main motives and goals of youth reading in the context of global information technology. Reading does not lose its relevance for young people, but a change in social attitude towards the book culture and a decline in the prestige of reading modify its basic characteristics. The factors affecting this process relate to the reading traditions in the parental family, the impact of reference groups, the level of education, and the place of residence. The external effect on this situation is explained by the promotion of reading value through the relevant social institutions influencing the process of socialization.
