Abstract

The tables used in the rituals during the early Goryeo Period varied from Hwaan(花案), Hyangan(香案), Gwaan(果案), Sujunan(壽尊案), Seoan(書案), Joan(詔案), Inan(印案), Saean(璽案), Saesuan(璽綏案), Chaegan(冊案), etc. It assumed that they were similar in size and form, but called by different names depending on what ritual they were used for or what was put on them. In the ritual process, each name used to changing, like Seoan to Joan, despite being the same table.
In the ritual banquet, Huwan, Gwaan, and Sujunan were placed around the king who is the main person of the banquet. Hwaan was used to decorate the space with flowers colorfully, Gwaan and Sujunan were tables for serving with food. Meanwhile, Hyangan was widely used for several rituals. In fact, it put an incense burner on Hyanan and burned incense directly, and, around it, the placement of the participants in the ritual was decided, or it became a center of moving line during the ritual procedure.
It is assumed that the various tables used in the ritual had the same material and similar shape, but the government office responsible for the installation changed depending on what was placed on it. Sangeuiguk(尙衣局), Sangsaguk(尙舍局), Jungsangseo(中尙署), and Dabang(茶房) were in charge of installation according to the character of the ritual and the use of the table. As such, the table provides useful information on the specific tasks of the government offices in the royal family of the Goryeo Dynasty.
