Abstract

Objectives The purpose of this study is to investigate the effects of emotional expression activities using picture books on young children’s emotional intelligence and empathic ability.
 Methods The subjects of this study were 24 young children (12 experiment group in Root class and 12 control group in Sprout class) for three-year-olds in G kindergarten located in T city, Gyeongsangnam-do. The experiments was done 16 sessions during an 8 week period on the experiment group emotional expression activities using picture books and on the control group did activites focusing on picture books. The pre- and post-test were conducted using the test tools for intelligence and empathic ability was based on Independent samples t-test and Mann Whitney U test as non-parametric test using the SPSS 25.0 program.
 Results First, emotional expression activities using picture books had the positive effect on the intelligence in terms of four sub-elements of intelligence: self-recognition and expression ability, self-adjusting ability, ability to recognize others and ability to adjust others. Second, emotional expression activities using picture books had the positive effect on the empathic ability in terms of three sub-elements of empathic ability: cognitive empathy, emotional empathy, and social skill.
 Conclusions Emotional expression activites using several picture books to express young children’s thoughts, feelings, and emotions through various plays such as art, body, language are the effecitve teaching-learning methods. It has positive influences to promote young children’s emotional intelligence and empathic ability.
