Abstract

During the Korean War, the Chinese leadership made significant policy decisions. This paper provided a detailed description of this process and outcome: under the circumstances in which the Soviet Union and North Korea decided to launch a military attack on South Korea, China reluctantly supported the initiation of the war. Under extremely difficult conditions as the UN forces broke through the 38th parallel, Mao Zedong decided to leave the majority opinion behind and fight. The purpose of the dispatch Chinese troops to Korea was to secure the safety of China and solidify the new revolutionary regime by gaining Stalin’s trust and relying on the deterrence of the Sino-Soviet alliance and the support of the Soviet Union. Subsequent historical developments show that these goals have been realized. This article reviewed a series of policy decisions by the Chinese leadership to deal with the first surrounding crisis since its foundation.
