Abstract

The study of virtual identity is a very popular topic. Researchers from different points of view approach the study of this phenomenon. They are interested in many issues: from the definition of virtual identity to its functions and features for different groups of Internet users. More and more areas of our life are moving to the online space. The intensive development of the Internet and the computerization of all spheres of life largely determines the formation of a new socio-cultural environment. Researchers are looking for a reflection of modern reality in the psychological characteristics of people. This article is an attempt to consider the most popular scientific views on this matter. Approaches to understanding the essence of virtual identity are considered, the concepts of identity and self-presentation are correlated. Some users will have an alternative identity. Real identity and self-presentation on a social network may differ. The article also discusses various motives of self-presentation of people in the online space. The studies that reveal age and sex differences in the behavior of Internet users are considered. Distortion of information about oneself on a social network can have different grounds in different age groups. Possible problem areas of research design are indicated.
