Abstract

The purpose of this study is to inquire on the coaching characteristics and competition culture created by Korean senior female golf beginners. This research method was auto-ethnography that is one of the qualitative research methods. In the study participants were 3 members with more than 60 years old. Data collection was interview, private memorandum and e-mail for 7 years. Data analysis was sorted into two subjects, one was coaching characteristics and the other was their inside culture. First subject, coaching characteristics was sorted into 15 categories depending on 5 period classifications Second subject, inside culture could be sorted into 13 categories depending on 5 period classifications. As result, core characteristics of coaching experience are as follows. First, they need easily repeatable motion more than rationalization because they fall behind in cognitive ability. Second, it is very useful to give them courage and self-confidence through sensuous compliment in order to attract them into steady practice. Third, they have possibility of physical improvement and mental abilities, so we need to give them the right stimulation and reward. Fourth, we need to be careful not to cling to the theory. If teaching the theory is necessary, we need to be consistent with coaching and explaining through motion. Finally, more meaningful characteristics which are revealed in their inside culture are competitive spirit and careness. The beginner’s pure competitiveness changed into interpersonal conflict such as jealousy or conflict but they became equipped with reflective attitude improving golf experience, skill and consideration for others.
