Abstract

The study of the fi gure of Mykola Fedotovych Biliashivsky (1867–1926) – a scientist-historian, archaeologist, ethnographer, art expert, one of the founders of the museum business, public fi gure, has a special relevance today, since the fi elds of science he was engaged in preserve the cultural and genetic code of the Ukrainian nation. The purpose of the research is to expand the source base for studying the life and activities of the outstanding scientist by introducing into scientifi c circulation about one hundred documents of the State Archives of the Kyiv region contained in 11 fonds. The basis of the structuring of the article was the biographical method in combination with the problem-chronological form of presenting the material. The author’s use of the methods of document analysis, information synthesis, and a comparative approach to the study of fi nancial information provide an opportunity for a historical-documentary reconstruction of individual facts of the scientist’s life and activities, the material situation of himself and the museum headed by him. The novelty of the publication lies in the use of little-known sources, some of which were discovered for the fi rst time. Among the latter is the scientist’s questionnaire fi lled out by him in 1924. It was the questionnaire that became the core around which all other documents were grouped. This technique allowed a more creative approach to the systematization of sources of information that are heterogeneous in form, content, and nature. The introduction of fi nancial documents into scientifi c circulation, primarily settlement and payment information, is also innovative, which made it possible to outline the sources of existence of the scientifi c community in the 1920s. A careful archival search expands the prospects of further historical research, and the study of biographical sources and autographs of M. Biliashivsky provides the basis for indepth anthroponymic studies. The documents presented in the article lead to the conclusion that all the activities of M. Biliashivsky on the preservation of national cultural heritage objectively served the idea of awareness and inheritance of Ukrainian identity.
