Abstract

This study examines morphological aspects of the use of proverbs by Korean language learners through a corpus analysis of language learners’ sentences containing proverbs. The sentences showed a high proportion of basic forms and inflectional forms, indicating that Korean language learners use proverbs without variation. Moreover, it was found that grammatical errors made up an overwhelming proportion of all errors, showing that learners often make mistakes in the appropriate grammatical forms when using proverbs, such as the quotative verb suffixes or metaphorical signs, rather than having difficulty understanding the meaning or vocabulary of the proverb. While previous proverb education has focused on meaning, this study highlights the need for education based on the usage patterns of learners regarding the expression of quotations, grammatical forms, and variability when using proverbs.
