Abstract

The objective of this study is to decide the relations between the stress from obesity and the self-esteem of children according to whether taking part in the exercise. The subjects of our research were 450 upper-grade students of elementary school. We used the questionnaire of Cho, Yang-Rae (1997) as the tool to measure the stress from obesity, and another questionnaire to measure the self-esteem was what had been corrected and compensated by Kim Hui-Hwa, Kim, Kyeong-Yeon (1998) on the base of Self-Perception`s Profile for children of Harter (1985). We carried out one-way analysis of variance, t-test verification, Pearson correlation coefficient, and regression analysis by using the data collected. As the result of our study, the stress from obesity and the self-esteem of the upper-grade students proved to have the negative correlation, and the stress from obesity and the self-esteem according to whether children take part in the exercise to have the statistically-meaningful differences. For both the boys and the girls, there were the statistically-meaningful differences in the stress and the self-esteem. In conclusion, the meaning of this study consists in reminding that the participation in the exercise, the movement instruction of the children PE leaders, and the right guidance and management for the obesity can play an great role to enhance the self-esteem in the childhood, the developmentally vital age, as participating in the exercise is an important factor to influence the obesity stress of the children.
