Abstract

The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship between exercise hours and cognitive age, and to analyze the impact of indoor exercise space quality on environmental satisfaction and exercise hours of older adults. A sample of 208 elderly participants who were 65 and older was recruited from apartment communities in Jang-Yu New Town, Gimhae, South Gyeongsang Province. Collected data were analyzed through descriptive statistics, correlations and exploratory factor analysis using SPSS 20.0, and a path model analysis using AMOS. Results indicated that the more exercise hours, the lower the cognitive age, especially in the emotion and appearance ages. The study also found that three categories of indoor exercise space quality (interior design, exercise equipment, and supportive space) were significantly positively correlated with exercise hours. Lastly, this study confirmed the importance of improving shower and storage space. The significance of this study was to propose a proper indoor exercise environmental design direction as a viable option for a healthy later life.
