Abstract

This study aimed to empirically investigate the process of forming Japanese theaters in each region in the early modern era of Korea. From the opening of the port to the beginning of liberation, Japanese theaters built in colonial Joseon were first surveyed by period and region. Efforts were made to prepare a basic list for full-scale research in the future. Starting with these Japanese theaters, the historical process of establishing theaters across the country has been revealed to some extent. The cultural infrastructure called theaters in each region formed in this way played an important role in forming an independent cultural field in each region. The cultural field of each region played a dynamic role in the history of modern Korean culture as they exchanged influences with the central cultural field.
