Abstract

Objectives The purpose of this study was to verify the sequential mediating effects of perfectionism, suppression of emotional expression, and parenting stress in the relationship between parentification and housework burnout in women with children.
Methods The data from 400 women with children were collected, and mediation analysis was conducted using the SPSS macro. Control variables, including age, education level, occupational status, marital satisfaction, economic level, and number of children, were included in the analysis.
Results The study confirmed the statistical significance of the indirect effects in three pathways: parentification → parenting stress → housework burnout, parentification → emotional expression suppression → parenting stress → housework burnout, and parentification → perfectionism → emotional expression suppression → parenting stress → housework burnout. Results verified the sequential mediating effects of perfectionism, suppression of emotional expression, and parenting stress in the relationship between parentification and housework burnout. Parentification can be closely associated with perfectionism, which can lead to suppression of emotional expression and increase the risk of parenting stress and housework burnout.
Conclusions This study suggested the foundation for intervention and prevention of housework burnout in parentified women with children by examining the mediating effect of perfectionism, suppression of emotional expression, and parenting stress.
