Abstract

The article introduces into scientific discourse a new Vyatka icon Sophia the Wisdom of God, dated back to 1850. Signed and dated by the artist icons are rare. They play a vital role in the formation of a holistic picture of icon painting. The study provides information on the client and the executor of the icon as a contribution to the church. A general representation of the existence of the images of St. Sofia on Vyatka and her copies. The icon is located in a Cherdyn history museum, Perm region, but has not been studied until today. During the research work, biographical facts about the Vyatka artist Ivan Menshikov, who painted the icon, were collected. This data includes his family, places of work, and residence. Additionally, the information on the customer of the icon, Kalashnikov Ioann Vasilievich, was established. The temple of the Epiphany in Cherdyn, for which the icon was created, is also preserved. The article provides historical information about this church. It explains the spiritual and historical-geographical ties between Vyatka and Cherdyn. The icon painter made a copy of the miraculous icon from the St. Sophia Church of St. Vokhma, Vyatka province, Slobodskoy district. Written sources provide information about the ancient imported miraculous icon of the 17th century Sophia the Wisdom of God, which has not survived but has come down to us in the form of this reduplication of 1850. The article provides brief information on the Sofia icon in historical sources of the beginning of the 17th century and its detailed description of the end of the 19th century in the local periodicals. It also presents a discovered archival photograph of the icon of the early XX century. Signed and dated icons are very rare. For Vyatka, this is a valuable discovery, since the concept of a "Vyatka icon" and its features have not yet been formed. This monument supplies one of the themes and the name of the author. It is essential to understand that the search for Vyatka icons is not limited to the territory of the Kirov region and the boundaries of the Vyatka diocese. The work integrated the research data of the Cherdynsk Museum of Local Lore named after Aleksandr S. Pushkin, Vyatka diocese, Vyatka State University, and Vyatka art museum. The study expands knowledge about the church artistic heritage of Vyatka, replenishes with a new signed dated monument, is useful in the fields of culture, education, the sphere of external and internal tourism, regional studies.
