Abstract

Objectives This study attempted to examine the subjectivity of social participation after retirement as perceived by middle-aged office workers using the Q methodology.
 Methods The Q research methodology was used to study individual subjective perception, and for this purpose, a total of 215 Q groups were formed through literature research review and in-depth interviews to collect Q groups. Finally, 40 Q samples were selected, and Q samples were classified for a total of 31 P samples.
 Results As a result of data analysis using the QUANL program, recognition of social participation is as follows. Type 1 is ‘Social Contribution Pursuing Type’, Type 2 is ‘Affluent Life Pursuit Type’, Type 3 is ‘Economic Security Pursuing Type’, Type 4 is ‘Life Value Pursuing Type’. It was identified and classified into relational, active, economic, and value dimensions.
 Conclusions This study can be said to have highlighted the meaning of social participation by examining various types of perceptions about social participation by middle-aged office workers after retirement. The results of this study are expected to contribute to improving the quality of life of middle-aged office workers after retirement.
