Abstract

A piece of a Chimi(a decorative roof tile on the ridge of the roof) with inscription, found at the Site of Sachenwangsa Temple, has been regarded as a material indicating that the Chimi was called ‘Rumi(樓尾)’ during the Silla Dynasty. However, as a result of reexamining the inscription, it is appropriate to be read as ‘樓瓦’. ‘樓瓦’ means ‘a roof tile of a tower’, rather than a term for the specific structure such as Chimi. Building sites of the main building(Geumdang), a hall(gangdang), corridors, two wooden pagodas, and two ‘assumed altars for the Mudra’ were identified in the Site of Sacheonwangsa Temple. ‘樓’ basically means a tower with multiple floors. Coriddors, a hall, and the main building do not seem to match the meaning of ‘樓’. Wooden pagoda corresponds to the meaning, but there is no case where it is referred to as ‘樓’. It is also structually inappropriate to install Chimi. The word ‘樓門(a tower gate)’ appears in the historical records, but it seems that ‘門(gate)’ was more suitable than ‘樓(tower)’ as a sign to indicate the installation location of the Chimi. A pair of sites ‘assumed altars for the Mudra’ which lies symmetrically in the east and west behind the main building is noteworthy as for the location of the Chimi. They were assumed altars where the monk Myeongrang(明郞) conducted the Mudra ceremony during the reign of King Munmu, but there are still many questions about whether the sites correspond to them. Earlier, those sites have been presumed to be ‘Sutra Tower’ or ‘Bell Tower’. The possibility of a tower building with a roof built on high platform was raised recently. Consequently, it can be assumed that ‘樓’ where the Chimi with inscription was installed was one of the sites of ‘assumed altars for the Mudra’.
