Abstract

The features of the national character in the prose of M. A. Sholokhov («Quiet Flows the Don», «Virgin soil upturned», «They Fought for Their Country») are considered. The main purpose of the study is to show the evolution of national character in the work of M. A. Sholokhov, to determine the content of the concept of «national character» and the criteria for its formation, the conditions for its change under the influence of historical events. The most vivid images of Cossack heroes are analyzed in connection with folk beliefs, folklore traditions, national life and the originality of the Don nature
