Abstract

The article is devoted to the analysis of the types of phraseological units motivation in modern works of fiction in English. First, the author gives a classification of these types of motivation, the insight into the history of studying this problem, as well as examples of phraseological units with the detailed analysis of their meanings origin. Then the paper analyses the selection of phraseological units from two modern English-language novels and the presence in their structure of such types of motivation as intertextuality, metaphoricity, symbolism and folk etymology, as well as these types mixing within the semantic meaning of one phraseological unit.
