Abstract

Choi-U chose moving capital from Gaegyung to Ganghwado as a way to keep his power in the situation of invasion of Mongolia. After the moving capital, his political power became more stronger. After the moving capital to Ganghwa giving him title and the promotion were all done. It shows Choi-u’s power was much stronger after the moving capital to Ganghwa. In Ganghwa Island, where the trade with Sung was made, Choi-U, not the king, became the center in the trade with Sung. In Ganghwa, Choi-U’s political and economic power was maintained.BR This is even more evident through the gifts he has given to bureaucrats. Originally, the king would often give gifts to bureaucrats to show their authority. However Choi-U gave gifts to bureaucrats like a king. What is more noteworthy is that he gave ceremonial goods to Civil Service examination passers directly. The examination was an important task for the king to select new bureaucrats to serve him. And that was the king’s right and duty. But Choi-U took away the rights from the king.BR In addition, in Ganghwa Island, he held a Lightning Lantern Ceremony(燃燈會) and invited the king. He also showed confidence in his power. As such, the power of Choi-U in Ganghwa Island became stronger and more stable.
