Abstract

Atmospheric deposition is the process of migration of pollutants from the atmosphere to the land surface. The data on it can be used to assess the ways of atmospheric impurities transport. The snow cover accumulates all kinds of dry and wet deposition. The use of the modern method of inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) made it possible to determine concentrations of more than 20 chemical elements in the snow cover. The paper presents the elemental composition of the snow cover in the industrial city of Irkutsk, at Listvyanka station, and on the coast of Lake Baikal. The distribution of atmospheric impurities in the snow cover by the main directions of air mass transport is examined. The total index of snow cover pollution characterizing the effect of a group of elements is calculated. The interannual dynamics of the total pollution index from 2003 to 2022 is traced. The snow cover studies have enable estimating the flows of elements from the atmosphere to the land surface in the Baikal region.
