Abstract

The objectives of this study was to explore the hierarchical competency of table tennis coaches. Hierarchical competencies were derived from literature review at first. Thereafter, initial competencies and sub-factors of each of which were reviewed by experts that table tennis coaches are required with. Next, Analytic Hierarchical Process(AHP) was conducted with 15 experts who are presently coaching in table tennis, working in competency, and teaching in sport pedagogy to identify the hierarchical order of the competencies and the sub-factors. Results of this study are shown as below. First of all, competencies derived from the literature review turned out to be ten factors including ‘creativity’, ‘problem solving’, ‘communication’, ‘information processing competency’, etc. along with 43 sub-factors. Secondly, according to the results of AHP, ‘Major Studies(0.337)’ was turned out to be the most important competency followed by ‘Communication(0.105)’, ‘Problem Solving(0.126)’, ‘Information Processing (0.056)’, ‘Self-Control(0.090)’, ‘Interpersonal Relationship(0.089)’, ‘Creativity(0.056)’, ‘Citizenship(0.033)’, and ‘Culture Understanding(0.024)’.
