Abstract

In recent years, there has been a growing awareness of the need for accurate forecasting of freight volumes as part of travel demand assessments. Freight demand forecasting is a complex process that has not been studied to the same extent as passenger demand forecasting. The article compares traditional freight demand forecasting models with tour-based models and discusses the features, advantages, limitations and suitability of models for testing on a real transport network. The aim of the study is to provide an overview of available freight demand forecasting models for inclusion in the transportation planning process
