Abstract

Severe consequences of the COVID-19 pandemic, both in demographic and socio-economic aspects, have predetermined many scientific studies. The scientific community in the field of medicine has increased interest in the role of vitamin Д in the development of acute respiratory infections. Vitamin Д is believed to be responsible for modulating the immune response. The mechanism of its action is associated with a decrease in the rate of replication of the virus, an increase in the concentration of anti-inflammatory cytokines, thereby reducing pro-inflammatory cytokines that cause pneumonia and lung damage. At the same time, the scientific community in the field of economics and sociology has deepened the factor analysis of the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on changes in consumer behavior due to changes in dietary habits associated with vitamin Д enrichment. Non-medical attention to vitamin Д in terms of its protective characteristics for the human body against acute respiratory infections, which include coronavirus, as well as an increased emphasis on information that the absence of vitamin Д deficiency reduces the likelihood of complications (such as “cytokine storm”) and death from COVID-19, led to increased the demand for food fortified with vitamin D, as well as dietary supplements.
