Abstract
Different opinions have been expressed in Armenian studies regarding the origin and period of use of the imperfect form with the ending -ում[um]. Having examined the facts concerning the origin and period of the use of the imperfect participle, we came to the conclusion that the beginning of the use of the participle with the morpheme -ում[um) should be considered the XII century. In our opinion, it should be considered proven in Armenian linguistics that the explanation that the ending of the imperfect participle - ում[um) is associated with the locative case. Since the imperfect participle with -ում[um) did not have an identical development path in all manifestations of the Armenian language, therefore, in some dialect areas, the ending ում[um) was attached to the infinitive, and in others to the stem of the verb.
