Abstract

Study of the yedoma strata with thick syngenetic ice wedges on the eastern coast of the Yamal Peninsula at the mouth of the Seyakha River, including radiocarbon dating of the enclosing sediments and ice wedge ice and determination of isotope composition of ice, showed that between 30 and 13 thousand calibrated years ago, the mean January air temperature was on average 10°C lower than the current one and varied from –35° to –33°C. The accumulation of yedoma strata on the northern plains of Western Siberia is evidence of the glacial cover absence in the area during the last glacial maximum.
