Abstract

The issue of the second Gulf War occupied an important part of the activities of the Iraqi Communist Party, despite its vacillating position on the issue. The Communist Party called for external intervention to bring down the Baath government at times, and called on states not to interfere in Iraqi internal affairs at other times. The Communist Party’s neglect of its popular bases inside Iraqi cities and limiting its work to party organizations far from the cities in northern Iraq led to losing the opportunity for effective participation by pressuring the regime to back down from the decision of the Gulf War and calling only for the overthrow of the Baath government, through statements in the party’s official newspaper and inviting opposition forces from During some party meetings to overthrow the Baath regime and establish a democratic state.
