Abstract

This article focuses on the birth and development of the oil industry of tsarist Russia in comparison with the oil industry in the United States. Through the analysis of various data, we came to the following conclusions. First of all, although the Russians already knew about petroleum from the 16th century, it was only after the Absheron Peninsula was acquired in 1813 that the oil industry began to develop in Russia. Second, in Russia in the mid-19th century, unlike in the United States, the modernization of the oil industry had not yet begun in earnest.
