Abstract

The purpose of this study was to analyze the impact of the sense of loss on suicidal ideation and the moderating effect of spiritual needs among elderly women living alone in rural areas. To this end, a survey was conducted on 250 elderly people aged 65 years or older using convenience sampling of 5 rural areas, and correlation, hierarchical regression, and statistical significance analysis of moderating effect were performed. As a result of the research, first, sense of loss and suicidal ideation showed a positive correlation, sense of loss and spiritual needs showed negative correlation between sense of loss and suicidal ideation. Second, both sense of loss and spiritual needs had a significant effect on suicidal ideation. Third, spiritual needs showed to have a moderating effect in the relationship between sense of loss and suicidal ideation. These results provide the groundwork of supporting spiritual needs for the prevention of suicide of elderly women living alone in rural areas who are likely to experience loss, and the practical implications for a spiritual approach to the prevention of elderly suicide in the practice of elderly welfare in the community.
