Abstract

The problem of mythology has attracted broad attention from scholars. The main question per- sists: can we use myths as historical sources, or identify some elements of them that transmit reality. The article is focused on the Argonautica, one of the principal myths of Antiquity. The chief aim of Jason was to find the Golden Fleece and to take it back to his homeland. The fleece was supposed to exist in the country of Aia. This Aia was identified with Colchis in the time of Herodotus, described as gold-rich, full of precious metals, iron, etc. Some col- leagues consider the myth, with its description of the wealth of Aia, as an historical source. Using other evidence the author concludes that the myth is not historical but literary.
