Abstract

The study aims to carry out diagnostics of reading skills among philology students pursuing a bachelor’s degree in the training programme “Pedagogical Education (with Two Educational Programme Specialisations)”. The paper considers reading literacy as a component of functional literacy and a condition for successful educational and professional activity, outlines ways to overcome the identified issues for reading literacy development among pedagogical university students. Scientific novelty of the study lies in determining the typology of reading skills that are in demand in the professional activity of a future Russian language and literature teacher. As a result, the level of reading skills formation of future Russian language and literature teachers at the Faculty of Philology of the South-Ural State Humanities-Pedagogical University has been assessed according to the four groups of skills: finding and extracting information, integrating and interpreting information, evaluating the content and form of the text, using information from the text, which makes it possible to make a conclusion about the low level of reading culture among future teachers.
