Abstract
The article substantiates the need to study the language situation in a large city, gives a brief description of the exoglossic language situation in the city of Ufa as a multinational and multilingual regional centre, and analyses the characteristics of urban bilingualism. The endoglossic language situation, studied within the framework of the sociolinguistic problem “the language of the city”, is also considered by the speech material of the city of Ufa. The analysis of Ufa city speech allows us to say that the language of the city, being a complex structured whole, a kind of conglomerate, has its own specificity. The study confirms the thesis of the territorial variation of the urban Russian speech (the language of the city and its subsystems).
