Abstract

The objective of the article is to study some rhythm-forming principles in I. A. Goncharov’s “Servants of the Old Times” in the context of the writer’s creative work. The author reveals the techniques typical of “rhythmic prose” and “ornamental prose”. The most frequent factors of rhythm formation are enumerations of homogeneous members of the sentence, accompanied by sound repeats, and syntactic constructions that relate to one another according to the principle of antithesis. There is a certain tendency in this work: with the help of “rhythmic prose” Goncharov creates not only a clearly built structure of the work, but also actively uses techniques typical of “ornamental prose”, an artistically decorated, aesthetically elegant prose.
