Abstract

The article considers the ideological and artistic originality of N. P. Wagner’s story “New Year”, which previously has not attracted the attention of literary critics and historians of literature. The study focuses on identifying the peculiarities of the writer’s worldview. The researcher tackles the following issues: artistic devices (linguistic means, story development techniques), the Christmas story canon as a basis of the storyline and its transformation in the story, poetics and the sources of images. N. P. Wagner’s story is compared with the works of the giants of the West European and Russian literature of the XIX century - Ch. Dickens, H. Ch. Andersen, N. V. Gogol, F. M. Dostoevsky, N. A. Nekrasov. The analysis indicates that the complicated genre structure of N. P. Wagner’s story combining the genre features of a tale, Christmas story and didactic story satisfies the author’s didactic purpose: to evoke sympathetic feelings and to stimulate a young reader’s thought.
