Abstract

The paper focuses on cartridge cases, fired from handguns, as objects of forensic-ballistics research, the cartridge cases, in turn, is an integral component of the cartridges. Cartridges for modern handguns can be divided as follows: Cartridges for smoothbore weapons, cartridges for rifled guns and cartridges of nominal caliber. Nowadays, unitary cartridges are mainly used, their cases and primers are made in different enterprises, with different metals, which somewhat complicates the process of identifying cartridge cases, whereas individual marks of weapon parts and mechanisms on different metals are reflected more or less differently. The purpose of the article is to show the process of comparing cartridge cases fired from firearms with each other, determining the value of identification results and discuss the problems, that arise during identification. It's all quite a complicated process. When comparing cartridge cases, the question of whether or not the general marks coincide must first be resolved. In case of coincidence of general signs, the examination will be continued according to private marks and if the general marks do not match, the examination in this regard will be terminated. As a result of the examination, the expert must draw a conclusion about the coincidence, not-coincidence or inability to identify. The expert conclusion is categorical and it is provided for during the investigation and the court. The identification process is difficult, as the process of comparison it is necessary to takes into account the long exploitation of the weapon, reflected in the details, which generate marks; Various metals used in the manufacture of the cartridge cases; Additional studies before and after the shot on the cartridge cases, which are not of weapons, from which the cartridge cases was fired; The shape and size of the projectile placed in the cartridge. Consequently, conducting such an research is quite difficult, requires time and appropriate qualifications.
