Abstract
The article reveals the relevance of the problem of developing the reading competence of students. One of the conditions for the socialization of students in a changing socio-cultural environment is revealed. The essence of reading culture in the conditions of information and digital environment, meaning, ways of reading are revealed. The studies of scientists devoted to reading, development of reading culture, formation of reading competence are analyzed. The factors that hinder the development of the reading culture of the individual are revealed. Emphasis is placed on the need for critical and meaningful reading.
