Abstract

Introduction: small business may be important for a more balanced development of Russian resource-type regions, but its current state has not been sufficiently studied. Aims: to determine of the state and features of the small business development in the regions of the resource type. Methods: descriptive statistics, Wilcoxon’s t-test, Student’s t-test, cluster analysis. Results: it is shown that the “resource curse” is generally not typical for the small business development in Russia, but the growth rate of small businesses turnover (adjusted for inflation) and their number in resource regions is below the national average. This is because in the resource regions, types of activities, where small businesses are dominant, are less represented. The specific indicators of small enterprises labor productivity and per capita turnover in resource-type regions are lower than the average for the country and the corresponding federal districts. At the same time, investments per small business enterprise are higher. Small business enterprises development indicators in the regions correlate to a small extent. There are different regional models for the development of small businesses, depending on their geographical location, climatic conditions, demographic trends, and economic situation. Conclusions: in the resource type regions, small business develops more slowly than in the country as a whole; it is less efficient in terms of labor productivity but receives more investment.
