Abstract

The paper discusses theoretical and empirical aspects of the notion of multiword compounds, as a contribution to a system of neologism extraction. We propose a prototypicality hierarchy according to Natural Theory, based mainly on the notion of semantic predictability as criterion for compoundhood. A corpus-linguistic perspective addresses the theoretical premises by implementing monodirectional and bidirectional association measures of collocation attraction to two-word (Adjective + Noun) combinations selected from the Monitor Corpus of Greek Neologisms, Research Centre for Scientific Terms and Neologisms of the Academy of Athens.
