Abstract

Based on field investigations and keyword analysis on newspaper articles, this study aims to provide reference information for effective forest land management strategies regarding the installation and maintenance of mountain photovoltaic power stations (MPPSs). We analyzed cases of heavy rain-induced damage and changes in social perception of MPPSs in South Korea and then compared them to those in foreign countries. The main cause of sediment-related disasters on slopes with MPPSs was heavy rainfall; nevertheless, the sediment-related disasters were intensified by reduced slope stability and poor drainage system due to disturbances in forests and topography. The field investigation results suggest that MPPSs without proper countermeasures are vulnerable to sediment-related disasters during heavy rainfall. In addition, the social perception of MPPSs has changed due to damage cases and policies concerning renewable energy. In the future, further enhanced strategies should be implemented for rational forest land utilization and conservation, while considering forest disturbance and sediment-related disaster risk.
