Abstract
The history of creation and development of computer-aided design (CAD) of roads from the first calculations to the modern works in according to the road information modeling concept is considered. The current turning point of the CAD systems for road design evolution, when road information modeling evolution goals are stated, but it is not clear how to achieve them by means of CAD systems, is analyzed. The 12 key elements of road information modeling best suited to evaluation of this conception in terms of not only software system development level but also of administrative environment are formulated. The high readiness of Russian software technologies equal to the foreign solutions is shown based on the existing experience analysis. In conclusion, the main directions and tasks of the road information modeling in Russian realities are formulated.
