Abstract
The article analyzes the processes of settlement and economic development of the territory of the modern Tambov region from ancient times to the founding of the city of Tambov, reveals the characteristic features and the main factors in the formation of the socio-economic system of the region. The main stages of colonization and development of the territory are investigated, and the influence of natural conditions and resources on the formation of economic specialization of the region is considered. The results of the study can be useful for the development strategies of the region and the preservation of its historical and cultural heritage.
