Abstract

The present article aims to study the role of proverbs and sayings in the teaching process of Spanish as a foreign language. The “Don Quixote” novel of Cervantes plays an important role in the Spanish paremiology didactics and can be viewed as a literary collection of proverbs and sayings. Based on proverbs and sayings of this novel, the article suggests several didactic activities that can be implemented in the teaching process of Spanish. The role of the context is also given importance in this regard, as the pragmatic potential of the proverbs and sayings as situational clichés is most evident in the communication processes. The study was carried out on the basis of both universal scientific methods of cognition and various principles of scientific-pedagogical research which derive from the peculiarities of the investigated material. A brief study of the issue leads to the conclusion that the inclusion of the proverbs and sayings from “Don Quixote” in the teaching process of Spanish as a foreign language can play an important role in the development of the linguistic and sociocultural competences as well as in the formation and development of translation skills and abilities of the students.
