Abstract

The research objective includes identifying specificity of F. M. Dostoevsky’s understanding of the Baltic German problem in the 1860-1870s. The paper shows how the Baltic German problematics is represented in female personages’ images, analyses Dostoevsky’s social-political views on the issue of the Baltic Germans’ religious freedom. Scientific originality of the study lies in the fact that the researcher for the first time reveals Dostoevsky’s views on the controversial issue of the social and legal status of the Baltic ethnic groups (the Germans, the Latvians, the Russians). The following conclusions are justified: firstly, Dostoevsky’s views on the Baltic German problem were in tune with his previous conceptions of Russia’s remote areas status, and, secondly, these views developed within the framework of his historical and philosophical conception of Russia - Europe relations.
