Abstract

The aim of the study is to identify specific features of youth jargon in the early 21st century. The paper presents a multidimensional systematization and an analysis of jargonisms according to the following aspects: denotative correlation (the thematic groups “People”, “Occupation”, “Computer, Internet”, “Objects”, “General Assessment”), origin (native and borrowed jargonisms), the sphere of distribution (varieties of youth jargon). The scientific novelty lies in the following: 1) a systematic approach to youth jargon is taken; 2) a multidimensional description of jargon units is given; 3) new linguistic material is described. As a result of the study, it was found that the identification of the most active thematic groups of jargonisms (“People”, “Computer, Internet”, “General Assessment”) allows the researchers to characterize the worldview of modern youth to a certain extent, i.e., to identify the sphere of their interests and to determine their value orientations. The analysis of words by origin helps to identify the active ways of replenishing modern youth jargon (external borrowings – from English, internal borrowings – replenishment of general youth jargon with elements of highly specialized computer jargon, metaphorization, suffixation, clipping, intentional distortion of the phonetic aspect of words). These ways also create expressiveness and evaluativeness, which are the constitutive features of jargon. The study of the varieties of youth jargon in the field of distribution demonstrates that youth jargon is a flexible, dynamic system built on hypo-hypernymic relations, with moving boundaries.
