Abstract

The paper considers the problem of suffering within the framework of the Eastern Orthodox theology and the Russian religious philosophy. Relying on the Orthodox exegetical studies and the Russian philosophers’ works, the article examines religious-moral and axiological aspects of suffering. Importance of suffering is identified. Scientific originality of the research lies in the fact that the authors analyse the chosen theological sources and the Russian philosophers’ works with a view to compare approaches to the problem of suffering in the Orthodox theology and the Russian religious philosophy. The research findings are as follows: the authors reveal similarities and differences of theological and religious-philosophical interpretations of ethical meaning of suffering.
