Abstract

The subject of the study is the Shirak region magic folktale "The Tale of Jampulad", which belongs to the ATU 560 "The Magic Ring" folktale type group according to the international classification of Hans-Jörg Uther. The actions and realities of the folktale (the status of the character and the presence of an inheritance, the acquisition of faithful animals and a magical item, the presence of taboos, the theft of a magical item by evil forces and its return to the character) are studied in the context of Armenian, as well as Italian, Japanese, Persian, Russian, Bulgarian, Georgian, Kyrgyz folktales of the same type. A scrupulous study of the tales shows that the Shirak version, which has certain similarities with other tales of the group, is distinguished by a peculiar plot structure and some motifs due to the mutual penetration of folklore material and dialectal features typical for the region.
