Abstract

We conducted a survey of indigenous species at 5 sites in Cheongsong-gun and Uiseong-gun in Gyeongsangbuk-do, Korea from March to April 2022. Nine species of diatoms are new to Korea and they are divided into 2 classes, 5 orders, 6 families, and 7 genera. The nomenclature, references, photographs, ecology, and distribution of the species are presented here. Nine diatom species are new to Korea, namely Achnanthes pseudoinflata, Encyonema pergracile, Gomphonema affinopsis, Gomphonema germainii, Gomphonema submehleri, Hannaea inaequidentata, Halamphora bicapitata, Neidiomorpha binodiformis, Orthoseira dendroteres, which were identified in 2022, Nine species found in river, stream, lake and pond showed species-specific habitats. H. inaequidentata and O. dendroteres were observed in low-flow, shallow stream, while other species were identified in lake and pond environments. Nine newly reported species of diatoms were investigated to live in an alkaline environment. This study highlights the diversity of diatoms in Korea, which is important for further studies on this group.
