Abstract

This paper describes an experiment conducted in an effort to realize an 'imaginary landscape' in which the virtual world and reality are integrated through the practice of media arts in actual places. This experiment attempts to create a new space using invisible display technology with transparency by which the virtual world and reality are unified. Reality integrated with the virtual world changes into a conceptual space within an idea, and the space mixed with the world within the idea leads to an imaginary space, a new media-combined space. Interfaces in the high-tech era are not limited to simple two-dimensional visual perception display media but pursue the integration of reality and the virtual realm beyond virtual reality. This phenomenon requires a wide range of technical and artistic integration with various fields and requires practical technicalization and research on applications in multiple fields. In the area of media art, from the perspective of a fusion between science and art, research on practical technologies and experiments in which artistic creations are not divided into a dichotomy are required, and the “imaginary landscape” project was planned as a venue for such media art experiments. Through this study, I would like to examine the artistic meaning of experimental explorations of an invisible screen and media installations in actual environments. During the project, visual experience in the environment is directly presented to the viewer and communicated with the place, thereby creating a multidimensional spatial production. That induces an emotional experience in the individual in a public space, expanding such an experience back into the public space and allowing viewers to experience this type of new space. In an ideological sense, the expansion of place and the perception of space will bring an image of the imagination into reality and motivate an experience of the landscape of the imagination. Through this project, we can look forward to an aesthetic experience of a space to as to stimulate the imagination and realize the objects of the imagination in reality.
